Artist Background:A seasoned sculptor of 30 years experience, Mr. Orbom has produced many works that have found homes around the world. St. Martin's College in Olympia, Washington preserves a collection of his sculpture in their museum and gardens. Dr. Chen, a renowned collector in Malibu, California, owns the largest collection of Jan's abstract sculpture and unique furniture. Pieces have settled in the UK, Germany, Japan, Canada and around the US. Starting an artistic career working as a motion picture set designer, Jan studied life drawing and perspective at Chinard's where his teacher, Mentor Huebner, told him he drew like a sculptor. Taking that statement to heart, Jan moved into the country and, while honing his skills with a chainsaw at the Big Sur sawmill, he started sculpting and developing an understanding of the wood. Over the years he has developed a knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the wood, which is so important when sculpting one piece originals as he does. Shortly after building his home in South Kona, Jan was visited in his studio by a large `Io, the Hawaiian hawk. "It flew right in with the claws outstretched, went back and forth a few times, then landed and walked out with a very dignified step." Hence, Hawaiian Hawk Studio solidified as his studio name. Inspired by the beauty and mystery of the many forms of natural phenomena in Hawaii, Jan is now producing fine sculptures and tables using beautiful Hawaiian woods. The work is taken to a hand rubbed finish stage with Danish oil.
Perfect as the finishing touch for any interior environment, Mr.
Orbom's sculptures have proven to enhance the corporate office, hotel
entrance and many a fine and humble home.
