Artists's Statement:

I have loved art all of my life. At the age of 6 I used to go to Art Museums on my own. I still do whenever I get the chance. I always considered myself a dabbler. I had taken classes in gold casting and jewelry fabrication, stained glass and glass fusing before I found clay.

Ever since my first hand building class I have been obsessed. I am still a student (and probably always will be) and have been blessed by having some of the best teachers on the island, Vicky Chock, Kay Mura, Sally Fletcher-Murchison and Shigeru Miyamoto, Joe Sur and Russell Wee.

Most of my Tattoo Heads are mourning pieces. Simple in form, but powerful in meaning. Each one with a circular shape represents the old Hawaiian symbol for mourning (a rolled piece of tapa that was used in scarification when someone passed).

There is no definitive consensus on what different patterned tattoos mean. Every family has their own opinion on what different patterns mean including mine, but I try and pick patterns that would be easy to interpret.

I also enjoy making plant forms. Using found pieces for stands or freshwater pearls and glass beads for the stamen make them a little more interesting to look at. Working at home surrounded by plants is also a very natural and relaxing atmosphere for trying to create my own ideas of what a plant could look like.
