Artists's Statement:

“My artwork is figurative and narrative. My relationships with people, their and my stories, memories and everyday happenings all inspire my art. I am looking for humor, heroism, irony, personal truths and redemption in the creative process. My favorite part of the human anatomy is the face and I’m exploring story-telling using portraiture.”

 Artists's Bio:

Maile Yawata was born, raised and educated in Hawaii and attended public schools and graduated from the University of Hawaii. She has worked as a professional artist and educator for many years.

Maile has created site specific public art pieces in Honolulu commissioned by the City and County of Honolulu/CETA for the Palolo Community pool, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for the Honolulu International Airport, and the SFCA/DOE for the new gym at Castle High School. All of the works were murals. Other murals were created for businesses and private residences.

Maile teaches art in the public schools through the Artists-in-the-Schools program and at Honolulu Community College. She is a member of Hawaii Craftsmen and the Honolulu Printmakers and works in the mediums of ceramic/mixed media sculpture, lithography and wood cut printmaking.
