Artist Statement My work utilizes the ephemeral with the emotional in fragile and or questionable sculpture and installation that i consider all to be self portraits. I am interested in the connections we have in life. To friends, family, passerbyers, to life itself. I construct work that emphasizes these connections. Some of these being strong and able to withstand time while others are fleeting and wait for a destiny of certain failure. Artist Bio Sean Michael Gallagher was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up on the beaches of South Florida. After moving to Los Angeles at the age of 21, he was awarded a position in 2003 to the Santa Monica College's Art Mentor Program, where as a result of a studio space for a year he received a Presidential Merit Scholarship and a Grant equalling full tuition to transfer to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and completing his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in 2006. Four days after graduation he moved into his new studio at Rhode Island School of Design, with a partial scholarship, including a teaching fellowship and grant from the Dean of Graduate Students and earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree in 2008. Gallagher has received numerous awards and exhibited nationally. Aside from the previously mentioned awards, he received two scholarship to attend classes at Ox-Bow artist residency and his work was selected for the 2008 NCECA, RJS Exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in which his installation was awarded the KBH Merit Award. During his stay at RISD he was elected Co-President of the Graduate Student Alliance, and through a RISD teaching fellowship design and taught "Wheel as a Tool for Sculpture" classes. He currently lives and work in Honolulu, Hawaii.
