The volunteer board works to develop and maintain a
communication link to the community by letting others know about Hawai`i Craftsmen’s
mission, goals, objectives and programs; they serve in leadership positions; approve and
monitor policies and procedures; suggest possible nominees to our board; maintain our
website and produce our newsletter; sponsor fundraising activities; and follow trends in
the arts and culture of Hawai`i when adopting and evaluating short and long range plans.
Our Program Director serves as a liaison to funding sources
and the community, oversees all program and daily operations, supervises contractors,
coordinates member and public education and encourages volunteer involvement at all
levels of operations. Except for guest jurors and instructors, all technical,
professional, and artistic services are performed by Hawai`i residents.
Historically, our board has consisted of working artists,
art educators and an occasional arts businessperson. This segment of the community will
continue to be our strength, keeping us focused on our educational purpose. However, we
have recognized the need to have a board that is more representative of the community at
large and to build our board to reflect this.
This strategy will help us build a larger base of support.
Ultimately, this will also create a greater awareness and appreciation of fine crafts.
To this end, we have recruited individuals who are well grounded in both the art and
business communities. Yet, they are all individuals who believe that human creativity is
still our greatest resource.
