LINDA COLLINS CHAPMAN CLAY
ARTIST STATEMENT I have been working with clay for 30 years, and I am still excited by the inherent cyclical nature of the ceramic process. Taking risks, exploring new dimensions, ‘playing with fire’, literally mirrors life in terms of anticipating change and accepting the results and challenges presented. The ceramic chemistry and carving may appear to be complicated, but I actually rely on time-tested ancient processes. Universal symbols act to illustrate a sense of order and space through abstraction and geometric formation. Innovation is a result of how the symbols, colors and theories are energized by a synthesis of new ideas and modern technology. My stoneware and porcelain pieces are wheel-thrown, combining both the traditional manner and unusual approaches to achieve risky and innovative vessels. Slip is then applied, and when the correct dryness is achieved, the piece is ready to be carved. Following the ancient technique of scraffito, I carve through the thin layer of color, back into the pot. This creates pattern and dimension. The fascination with the decoration of each piece lies in creating a three dimensional image on a flat surface. The viewer’s eye does the work. The pots are then high-fired in an oxidation atmosphere using an electric kiln. At this point I lose control of the process and leave to the fates which pots will survive and be successful.
