HAWAI'I CRAFTSMEN VIDEOS

Hawai'i Craftsmen has produced several award-winning film/videos for use in the schools, art classes, and for sale to the public which have promoted excellence in craft arts by highlighting achievements.

  • Raku Ho`olaule`a(1983) reveals how Hawaii potters adapt the ancient Japanese ceramic process of raku. From the simple beauty of a Zen tea ceremony to the dramatic night firings on tropical beaches, this program captures the special blend of artistic and ethnic influences that make island potters unique. Through their annual beach gathering and exhibition, local artists share their experience of clay. Having received production and editing support from Oceanic Community Programming, Raku Ho'olaule'a won the 1984 ACE Award for a Local Documentary, the 1985 JVC Professional Competition Award for cable production, and was aired on ATC cable stations across the mainland.

  • The Hawaiian Quilt...A Cherished Tradition celebrates the rich family traditions of this dynamic folk art. Images of over 100 of Hawai`i finest quilts are interwoven with the personal tales of master quilters, making this film the most comprehensive and revealing treatment of the subject ever done. In probing the artists' sources of design inspiration, this documentary brings the history, philosophy, and natural beauty of the islands to life.
