Juror Emily Zaiden, Director and Curator, Craft in America Center

JUROR STATEMENT

It will be a pure delight to serve as juror for the 2019 Hawai’i Craftsmen Statewide Exhibition. Thank you for this opportunity to delve into the work of your creative community. Having the all-too-rare chance to jury in person makes this particularly special, as craft can hardly be captured through images alone. As neighbors in the West, since I am a curator based in Los Angeles, I am thrilled to see what’s happening in your neck of the woods. I hope to explore what currently defines craft in your state, especially in terms of technique, skill, design, tradition and expression. At Craft in America, we explore the ever-shifting nature of the handmade across the U.S. and the artists like yourselves who are dedicated to mastery and innovation through materials and processes. How an object can convey cultural identity at any given time is my personal passion, stemming from my roots in American decorative arts history and material culture. I look forward to delving into the qualities that characterize craft on each of your individual islands and the ways that craft embodies the spirit of your community and place in this day and age.

Frequently Asked Questions

THE VISIBLE HAND: HAWAI‘I CRAFTSMEN STATEWIDE EXHIBITION
AUGUST 30, 2019 – OCTOBER 4, 2019
HONOLULU MUSEUM OF ART SCHOOL GALLERY

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?

Applying to this exhibition is a 2 step process. First, you register online. Then you bring your artwork in to be juried. We jury all artwork in person (with the exception of Moloka’i and Lana’i).

Register Online:

1. Check your membership status. If you are already a Hawai’i Craftsmen member, make sure you are current through October 4, 2019. If you are not a member then you can either join Hawai’i Craftsmen to receive the discounted registration price ($25), or continue as a guest and pay the non-member price ($75).
2. Submit up to six pieces online through our event registration form. You will need your: contact information, artwork titles, artwork dimensions, artwork prices, and a photo of each piece.
3. Pay the entry fees.

Registration is open from July 15 - August 11. If you are new to this, give yourself a little extra time to work through any issues. We can’t accept any registrations after August 11.

Artwork Jurying:

1. Bring your registered artwork to drop off location on the date and times listed in the prospectus
2. Pick up your artwork after the jurying on the dates and times listed in the prospectus. This is when you will find out if your work was accepted.
3. Consider attending the free public lecture by the juror, held in the same location.

If your work is not accepted, don’t feel bad! Seriously, it happens to everyone and is not a judgement on the quality of your work. The juror is tasked with putting together a cohesive exhibition that represents all of the islands and a variety of media. Not every great piece gets accepted.

If your work is accepted on one of the neighbor islands, you must pay for shipping to O’ahu, and we will pay for shipping back to you when the exhibition closes. Shipping instructions will be provided at artwork pickup.

ARE YOU USING CaFE?

Not this year. Based on member feedback, online registration will be through hawaiicraftsmen.org

ARE THE IMAGES USED TO JUDGE THE ARTWORK?

No. We use them for administrative purposes. Although great quality images are recommended, they are not required. Only Moloka’i and Lana’i are juried online.

DO I HAVE TO APPLY ONLINE?

Yes, although there are many ways to get help with this and we are happy to do it! No shame! Contact your island chairperson. You can find their contact information in the prospectus.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Registration fee for Hawai’i Craftsmen members is $25 for the first two entries, $10 for each additional entry up to 6. Registration fee for non-members is $75 for the first two entries, $10 for each additional entry up to 6.
